Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill Rye 2026: An Extraordinary Tennessee Whiskey
An exclusive virtual tasting with Master Distiller Chris Fletcher reveals the craftsmanship, patience, and remarkable character behind Jack Daniel’s latest Single Barrel Special Release.
There are certain whiskey releases that command your attention before the first sip. Then there are those rare expressions that completely redefine your expectations of a distillery. The newly released Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye belongs firmly in the latter category.
Ahead of its October 20, 2026, debut, Drink The Bottles had the privilege of participating in a virtual tasting with Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller Chris Fletcher. The experience offered a fascinating look into the whiskey-making philosophy, production techniques, and distinctive maturation conditions responsible for this extraordinary limited release.
And after spending time with our 133.1-proof sample, we can confidently say this: Coy Hill Rye may very well be the finest Jack Daniel’s whiskey we have ever tasted.
That's no small compliment.
No Secrets. Just Exceptional Whiskey.
During our conversation, Fletcher made a statement that perfectly captured the straightforward philosophy behind the legendary Lynchburg distillery.
"There are no secrets at Jack Daniel's. There is nothing proprietary here."
For a distillery with such an enormous global reputation, that refreshing transparency speaks volumes. Jack Daniel's isn't relying on mystery or elaborate marketing language to explain its success. Instead, its whiskey is built on generations of experience, meticulous production methods, and an unwavering commitment to consistency and quality.
The distillery's rye whiskey journey began in February 2011, eventually developing into a portfolio of expressions that continues to demonstrate just how versatile rye whiskey can be. Coy Hill Rye represents another remarkable chapter in that evolution.
Ten Years Above Lynchburg
Perched at the highest elevation of the Jack Daniel Distillery, Coy Hill has developed an almost legendary reputation among whiskey enthusiasts. The elevated barrelhouses experience substantial seasonal temperature fluctuations, encouraging the whiskey to move in and out of the oak as the barrels expand and contract.
For this special release, Jack Daniel's selected rye whiskey distilled in 2016 and matured for approximately a decade in the Coy Hill barrelhouses. The result is a whiskey of tremendous concentration, remarkable complexity, and unmistakable individuality.
Fletcher emphasized that maturation involves far more than simply filling a barrel and waiting.
"Not everything in whiskey aging is an exact science."
Weather conditions, barrelhouse placement, elevation, and even the particular floor on which a barrel rests can influence the finished whiskey. These variables help explain why individual barrels can develop such distinctive personalities, even when they began with the same mash bill and production methods. And with this being a single barrel release, those individual characteristics are very much part of the appeal.
The Details Behind the Whiskey
Jack Daniel's Coy Hill Rye begins with the distillery's Tennessee Rye mash bill:
70% Rye
18% Corn
12% Malted Barley
Distillation begins in the distillery's towering 40-foot column still before the spirit undergoes a second distillation through a doubler (pot still). From there, the clear distillate passes through approximately three feet of sugar maple charcoal as part of the distillery's signature charcoal mellowing process.
That is considerably less charcoal than the approximately ten feet used for many of Jack Daniel's traditional Tennessee whiskey expressions.
Another fascinating detail from our tasting involved the barrels themselves. Fletcher explained that the barrels undergo approximately eleven minutes of toasting before receiving their secondary charring treatment. This combination of heat treatments helps develop the oak characteristics that ultimately become integral to the whiskey's flavor profile.
Equally interesting is the role of yeast. Jack Daniel's microbiologist Janessa Green oversees the cultivation of fresh yeast each week, helping maintain a critical component of the distillery's fermentation process.
Fletcher discussed the importance of both yeast and barrel preparation in developing the character of this rye whiskey. It's a reminder that exceptional whiskey begins long before it enters a barrel.
A Remarkable Tasting Experience
Our sample arrived at 133.1 proof (66.55% ABV), placing it comfortably within the release's formidable barrel-proof range.
Even before pouring, the whiskey's appearance was striking. Inside the bottle, the liquid appeared nearly as dark as black coffee, suggesting the intense interaction between spirit and oak over its decade of maturation.
Despite the considerable proof, the whiskey delivered an impressively layered and rewarding experience.
On the Nose
On the Palate
The first sip revealed a beautiful interplay between sweetness, spice, and mature oak.
Toasted gingerbread and brown sugar carried through from the nose before transitioning into a fascinating mid-palate of earthy black tea, aromatic herbs, and refreshing spearmint.
The rye character remained unmistakable, yet there was an impressive richness that prevented the spice from overwhelming the experience.
At 133.1 proof, we anticipated considerable intensity. What surprised us was how seamlessly that power integrated with the whiskey's complexity. This is a bold expression, certainly, but one that rewards thoughtful sipping rather than simply relying on proof to make an impression.
The Finish
The finish is where Coy Hill Rye truly distinguishes itself.
Sweet oak gradually transitions into a drier, more mature wood character, followed by nuanced impressions of aged tobacco and supple leather.
Those deeper notes linger beautifully, accompanied by persistent rye spice and a warmth that feels entirely appropriate for a whiskey of this strength.
Long, evolving, and exceptionally satisfying, the finish provides a fitting conclusion to a remarkable tasting experience.
A Limited Release Worth Seeking Out
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye is bottled at barrel proof, with individual barrels ranging from 128.7 to 148.5 proof. Approximately 5,300 six-bottle cases were produced, making this a relatively limited offering for a distillery with Jack Daniel's global reach. The whiskey is presented in 700mL bottles with a suggested retail price of $89.99.
This release follows the 2025 Tanyard Hill Rye and continues the distillery's tradition of exploring the exceptional whiskey produced in its distinctive barrelhouse environments.
During our virtual tasting, Fletcher also shared that the team continues to experiment with a variety of rye whiskey projects. For enthusiasts who have followed the evolution of Jack Daniel's rye program, that is exciting news indeed.
The Drink The Bottles Verdict
98 Points | Exceptional
We have enjoyed numerous Jack Daniel's expressions over the years, including some outstanding limited releases. But this 2026 Coy Hill Rye stands apart.
The remarkable balance of toasted sweetness, herbal complexity, assertive rye character, and beautifully developed oak creates a tasting experience that is both powerful and sophisticated.
Its considerable barrel proof never overshadows the depth of flavor. Instead, the intensity amplifies the whiskey's distinctive character.
The opportunity to hear Chris Fletcher explain the thought, experimentation, and patience behind this release made the experience even more memorable.
But ultimately, the whiskey must speak for itself.
And this one speaks volumes.
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye is quite possibly the finest Jack Daniel's whiskey we have tasted to date.
For collectors, rye enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates exceptional American whiskey, this is a release deserving of serious attention.
