2021 Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel

2021 Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel

A Taste of Sonoma History in Every Glass

When many people hear the word Zinfandel, they immediately think of a sweeter, easy-drinking wine style that became popular decades ago. But true California Zinfandel has a much deeper story — one rooted in history, old vineyards, and winemakers who have worked for generations to preserve some of the country’s most treasured vines.

The 2021 Old Vine Zinfandel from Dry Creek Vineyard is a perfect example of why this grape deserves more attention. This is not simply a fruit-forward California red. It is a wine built around heritage, balance, and the character that can only come from vines that have stood the test of time.

Located in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, Dry Creek Vineyard has long been recognized for its commitment to Zinfandel and the preservation of old vine vineyards. In fact, the winery is credited with first coining the term “Old Vine Zinfandel” in 1987 when it wanted to highlight the unique character of its historic vineyards.

While there is no official legal definition for what qualifies as an “old vine,” Dry Creek Vineyard considers vineyards with vines averaging more than 50 years old to meet that distinction. For the 2021 Old Vine Zinfandel, the vines are significantly older, averaging more than 100 years in age, with some approaching 140 years old.  These mature vines produce naturally lower yields, but what they may sacrifice in quantity they often make up for in concentration and complexity. Their deep root systems allow them to reach moisture and nutrients that younger vines cannot, helping create wines with remarkable depth and personality.

The 2021 vintage was a challenging growing season throughout California due to drought conditions, but careful vineyard management resulted in a mostly exceptionally high-quality harvest. Dry Creek Vineyard described the season as moderate and consistent, with smaller yields but excellent overall quality.

The 2021 Dry Creek Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel is a traditional California field blend that showcases the versatility of old vine vineyards.  This is a combination of 77% Zinfandel, 20% Petite Sirah, and 3% Alicante Bouschet.  The addition of Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet adds structure, color, and depth, helping create a wine that is more layered than many single-varietal Zinfandels.

Pouring the wine reveals an incredibly deep ruby color with impressive concentration in the glass. The first aromas immediately showcase the classic personality of old vine Zinfandel — rich dark fruit balanced with spice and earth.  On the nose, we found inviting aromas of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry, and juicy black cherry, followed by layers of baking spice, peppercorn, and subtle oak. There is also a sweetness to the aromatics that reminds us of dark fruit preserves, but it never crosses into being overly jammy.

The palate is where this wine truly shines.  The first sip brings forward flavors of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, followed by more complex notes of mocha, espresso, coriander, violet, and spices that warm the soul. The fruit is rich and expressive, but the wine maintains excellent balance with bright acidity and well-integrated tannins.

Many California Zinfandels can become heavy or overly ripe, but this one shows impressive restraint. The older vines seem to provide a level of elegance and structure that keeps the wine lively from start to finish.  The finish is long and satisfying, leaving behind lingering notes of dark fruit, cocoa, spice, and a touch of toasted oak.

This is an excellent food wine and some pairing suggestions include barbecue, smoked meats, braised shortrib, burgers or hearty pastas.  We should probably also mention that this label is a work of art!
