When the Blend Becomes Greater Than the Barrels

In today's bourbon landscape, it seems like every new brand is chasing the next limited release. Silverthorn Reserve has taken a different approach. Rather than focusing on volume or flashy marketing, the company has built its identity around something that often gets overlooked—the art of blending.

Founded by Drew Thorn after helping build Sagamore Spirit into a nationally recognized whiskey brand, Silverthorn Reserve is intentionally small. Every release is produced from just a handful of carefully selected barrels, allowing the team to prioritize flavor over scale. Transparency is equally important. Each bottle details exactly what went into the blend, from the originating states to the mash bills and blending percentages, giving whiskey enthusiasts a rare level of insight into what they're drinking.

The Silverthorn Reserve 10-Year Blender's Art Bourbon is an excellent example of that philosophy in action. Rather than relying on a single distillery or mash bill, this release combines eight barrels from three different whiskey-producing states into a remarkably cohesive pour.

While this isn't marketed as a "small batch" product, this releases is comprised of eight barrels sourced as below:

  • 68%:  Kentucky 10 year.  Mashbill of corn (74%), rye (18%), malted barley (8%)
  • 22%:  Indiana 10 year.  Mashbill of corn (51%), rye (15%), malted barley (34%)
  • 10%:  Georgia 14 year.  Mashbill of corn (80%), rye (10%), wheat (5%), malted barley (5%)

Bottled at a very pleasant 115 proof and non-chill filtered, the whiskey delivers plenty of character while allowing each component to contribute something unique.  (Side note:  This proof point is right in our wheelhouse, so it is checking off a lot of boxes!)

The aroma immediately opens with rich, cooked caramel and vanilla layered over maple syrup, warm flapjacks and seasoned oak. Given the proof, we expected an aggressive nose, but it remains welcomely refined. As the whiskey sits in the glass, subtle baking spices begin to emerge, adding complexity without overpowering the sweeter notes.  The aromas then carry us back to a sun-drenched, dusty window sill in the middle of a rickhouse.  The transition is almost magical.

The first sip is rich and mouth-coating. Caramel and light brown sugar lead the charge before giving way to cinnamon, baking spices, toasted oak, antique barn wood and hints of roasted malt. The higher proof provides plenty of intensity, but the blend remains remarkably balanced. Instead of any one component dominating the experience, each whiskey seems to take its turn across the palate.  The finish is long, warming, and satisfying, leaving just enough sweetness to encourage another sip.

Creating an exceptional bourbon isn't always about finding the perfect barrel. Sometimes it's about understanding how great barrels can complement one another.  That's where Silverthorn Reserve shines.

The 10-Year Blender's Art Bourbon isn't simply a collection of mature whiskey. It's a carefully orchestrated blend where each component contributes something meaningful to the finished product. 2020 Fieldhouse 301 Red Wine

  This was our first experience with the wines offered by Scout & Cellar of Texas.  They seem to have a little bit of something for just about everyone, especially if you are budget-minded, as most of their offerings are in the $19 - $36 range.  At those prices you can find a daily drinker, no doubt!  This wine is the 2020 Fieldhouse 301 Red Wine (blend) from California.  You would typically find Cabernet Sauvignon in a red blend, but this one is a combination of Zinfandel (48%), Merlot (23%), Petite Sirah (12%), Carignan (9%) and Barbera (8%).   You don't find Carignan in too many California wines, even as a blending grape, so that was interesting to us.  This wine had a great medium purple color with blackberry, coffee bean and menthol nose.  With a lighter-to-medium mouthfeel, flavors of sweet blackberry preserves, roasted coffee beans, pepper and red licorice.  This is not a sugar bomb (if we have given that impression) but it i...

NV Winking Owl Merlot

Why would you buy a bottle of wine for $2.49 you ask?  I honestly don't have an answer.  Curiosity probably got the best of me.  Flashbacks of "Two Buck Chuck" bounced around in my head as I passed this at Aldi several times yesterday.  But I like to keep an open mind and I'm always up to a challenge so I figured at this price, I'm really no worse for wear.  This bottle is less than a cup of coffee at most restaurants and I've spent far more money on less satisfying objects in my lifetime.  So, without further ado, I present the non-vintage Winking Owl Merlot..... I should start by saying that I am generally perplexed by anyone  who can put wine in a bottle for this price.  After all, sans juice, you still have the bottle, the cork, the label, the capsule, the outer packaging, the marketing, etc, etc to take into consideration of the total cost at checkout.  So when you remove those items from the cost of the bottle of wine, what do you have?...
