Penelope Cooper Series Riviera Whiskey

Penelope Cooper Series Riviera Whiskey

One of the things we've always appreciated about Penelope is that they aren't afraid to experiment.  In fact, some might argue that they paved the path for many other distilleries for blending and creating unique spirits.  In an era where every new whiskey release seems to promise bigger proof, older age statements, or increasingly exotic finishes, Penelope has managed to find a balance between innovation and drinkability. That philosophy is on full display in the Cooper Series, a collection that allows the brand to explore unique finishing techniques while still keeping the whiskey approachable and enjoyable.

Enter Riviera.  Part of Penelope's popular Cooper Series, Riviera takes a blend straight bourbon and 8-year American light whiskey and finishes it in rosé wine casks. On paper, it sounds like a whiskey designed for warmer weather and outdoor gatherings. In the glass, it turns out to be exactly that.

The Cooper Series has become one of the more interesting projects in modern American whiskey.  Rather than simply releasing another bourbon with a different label, Penelope uses the series to showcase how various cask finishes can influence and transform a whiskey. The finishing barrels aren't meant to overpower the spirit. Instead, they add layers of character that create a completely different experience while still allowing the whiskey itself to shine through.

The mash bill is corn (74%), wheat (16%), rye (7%) and malted barle (3%).  Riviera pours a beautiful medium brown with golden highlights throughout the glass. The color immediately hints at a whiskey that may be a little lighter and brighter than a traditional bourbon, which is expected from this blend.

The aroma is incredibly inviting.  Fresh red fruit immediately lifts from the glass, accompanied by ripe stone fruits and floral notes that feel almost spring-like in character. Underneath those brighter aromas is a subtle note of baked goods that reminds me of a warm croissant fresh from the bakery.

The palate follows through beautifully on what the nose promises.  Light, airy, and remarkably approachable, Riviera carries a gentle sweetness that never becomes overwhelming. The rosé cask influence is evident, but it never dominates the whiskey.  Stone fruits become the centerpiece of the experience.  The mouthfeel remains soft and refined while maintaining enough structure to keep the whiskey interesting from start to finish.  The finish introduces a touch of spice that balances the sweeter fruit-forward profile.

The Penelope Cooper series has garnered well-deserved positive attention since the first release.  We are absolutely loving the line up!
